THREE time Tour de France winner Greg LeMond is to take part in the Get BACk Challenge Cycle this June, raising money for the Limerick Sports Partnerships in the process.

The event, now in its eighth year, is organised by accountants and business advisors Focus Consulting, who are based in Michael Street in the city and is the sixth to feature the legendary American cyclist.

Over 170 cyclists took part last year in the event, which began in UL and featured a circuit around Lough Derg. This year Focus have moved the event to Kilkee.

“We decided to go back to Clare, we have a spectacular route out by the coast and people like cycling by the sea in the summer,” explained Focus Consulting’s managing director Brian McGann this week.

The Get BACk cycle raised over €50,000 for the Local Sports Partnerships in Limerick city and county last year and aims to help children living in socially disadvantaged areas and those with disabilities.

Tour champ LeMond’s involvement is crucial to the event’s success, explained Mr McGann.

“For Greg to keep coming back, I have to hand it to him, he is phenomenal to keep doing our cycle, we are so lucky to have him,” he explained.

“He really wants kids to keep participating in sport and he really loves coming to Ireland and to Limerick. He was here a couple of months ago for nearly a week, and he would just walk around Limerick and come back and rave about it.”

The annual cycle, which takes place on June 15, will offer participants a choice of a 60km or 120km route, plus a 10km walk.

“It is open to everyone,” said Brian.

“Come and enjoy the sport of cycling, it is not a race, it is a celebration and about enjoying the day out on a bike, while raising whatever you can for a really worthy cause. We love doing it.”

The event will finish at the Diamond Rocks in Kilkee, with a BBQ afterward. See www.getbackchallenge.com for details.
