CORK has the Jack Lynch Tunnel so why can’t Limerick have the Mick Mackey Roundabout, asked Cllr Michael Sheahan at a Castleconnell Local Area meeting.
Coincidentally, Cllr Sheahan’s proposal followed a discussion also on signs for Annacotty village. The Monaleen man proposed that the Newport roundabout be renamed the Mick Mackey Roundabout.
“A lot of people have suggested to me that the great Limerick and Ahane GAA man should be honoured. We have a Tipperary name – the Newport roundabout – in the middle of our county. Why not honour this super sportsman?
“Cork have the Jack Lynch Tunnel so why can’t we honour one of our all time greats? Next year will be the 100th anniversary of the birth of the great Castleconnell man,” said Cllr Sheahan, who added that he had spoken to Paul Crowe, director of services transportation and water, and there are no great obstacles.
