SOME of Europe’s top elite athletes are coming to Limerick this weekend to participate in the prestigious European Duathlon Championships, being held in Ireland for the first time.

The championships will feature athletes from 16 countries around Europe, the United States and Russia and will see participants cycling and running in and around the city. St Gabriel’s Centre in Dooradoyle are to benefit from the event, with €5 from every entry going to the school.

The event is being organised by Limerick Triathlon Club with the support of Shannon Development, Limerick City Council and UL, and will see hundreds of athletes taking part for the three days of the competition.

“We are looking forward to welcoming the athletes, race officials, family and friends to the European Duathlon Championships and Limerick, European City of Sport this year,” said Maeve Kavanagh of Limerick Triathlon Club.

“The final preparations are underway and it promises to be a fantastic weekend of sport and entertainment. We would encourage the people of Limerick to come and support these top class athletes as they race through the streets of the city,” she added.

The event takes the form of a 10km run, 40km cycle and 5km run in the championship category, while the open race will take place on Sunday morning and feature hundreds of athletes taking part on a slightly less challenging course with shorter time durations.

The club encouraged local athletes to train for this category and Maeve said LTC are “delighted with the numbers that registered” for the open event.

“The hosting of these championships in Limerick presents an ideal opportunity to try out something new, to get fit and to be a part of this European sporting event,” she said.

The opening ceremony for the Duathlon Championships takes place in the Limerick Strand Hotel this Friday at 6pm, followed a ‘Parade of Nations’ to the Milk Market, with plenty of food and music lined up for the weekend.
