Car fire causes major delays on Limerick motorway

The blaze started at around 8.30pm

A CAR fire on the M7 motorway approaching Limerick city has resulted in significant traffic delays this Sunday night.

The alarm was raised shortly before 8.30pm when the blaze started on the Limerick-bound carriageway between Junction 27 (Birdhill) and Junction 28 (Castletroy).

A video from one motorist, shared with the Limerick Leader/Limerick Live, shows a saloon-type car pulled into the hard shoulder on fire. It appears from the footage that the vehicle was extensively damaged.

"Tail back on motorway from Dublin to Limerick," wrote a witness on social media, later adding that motorists caught up in the incident were still "stuck".

Emergency services, including units of the fire service from Nenagh and Newport attended and there was a full lane closure in place for a time.

There are no reports of any serious injuries and the cause of the blaze is not not known.
