UP to 40 teams from across Ireland and the UK will line out on the Bull’s field next weekend when Bruff RFC hosts their annual tag rugby festival.
The Bull ‘N’ Booze festival kicks off on Friday, August 8 with competitions taking place on Saturday, August 9.
“The tagline we are using is ‘Come On and Play on the Bull’s Field’,” said Mike Gleeson, PRO of Bruff RFC in reference to the Kilballyowen grounds where rugby legend John ‘The Bull’ Hayes played his club rugby.
“We are emphasising the social aspect. We don’t want people coming on with the mindset of win at all costs. We want them to get as many games as possible so that they are not bored and they enjoy themselves. The craic first and the score second,” he added.
Free camping facilities are available and there will also be a barbecue all day on Saturday.
“You can have a three-course evening meal on the Saturday evening but that has to be pre-booked. You can book breakfast on the Sunday morning. When the games are all over we have a band, Never the Less, and disco in the club and we have an outdoor bar and marquee,” said Mike.
Those who may not be au fait with tag rugby are being asked to let the organisers know upon registration so that they can take part in a workshop on the Friday evening to assist them with the rules. “It might be just a group of friends wanting to go out for the craic – well come on, we will show you,” said Mike. “The whole idea of tag is that you would have at least four girls on your team - it’s a team of 12. You rotate them constantly because the girls’ try is three points and the boys’ try is one point. It encourages a mix.”
In the region of 40 teams from across the UK and Ireland are set to take part in the festival, and places are still available for teams. The price to register a team is €200.
