THE fundraising efforts of teenager Donal Walsh who passed away from cancer earlier this month are being continued by a County Limerick rugby club who have organised a bungee jump in his memory.

Galbally RFC will host a Jump For Donal event to raise funds for Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital in Crumlin.

Donal was just 12-years-old when he was first diagnosed with cancer. Despite bravely fighting the disease over a four year period, he passed away on May 12 at his home outside Tralee, surrounded by his family.

Donal’s father Fionnbar hails from Knocklong and his uncle Andrew Walsh who is from nearby Glenbrohane is an active member of Galbally RFC. Donal’s first cousins also play with the club.

“It came about from Andrew discussing that he would like to do something to raise funds for Crumlin in Donal’s name,” explained Jim Stapleton, chairman of Galbally RFC.

Donal had previously fundraised to improve the conditions for patients and their families within Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital in Crumlin where he had received treatment. He had raised €50,000 for the hospital.

The Jump For Donal event takes place on Saturday, June 22 at Galbally RFC. A total of 55 people have already signed up to do the jump. “Our target is 120 – that’s the maximum the jump company can allow in a day. Obviously, if we have 120 doing it, it means more money for Crumlin and it means more people in Galbally so it has the makings of a much better day as well,” said Jim.

As Donal’s coffin was shouldered by players of the Munster squad, Galbally RFC are inviting all Munster rugby clubs to be represented in the Jump For Donal event by nominating a member or members from their club who would be willing to jump on the day.

Jumpers will get a sponsorship card which contains 30 lines of €10 per line.

“We are trying to make it a family fun afternoon so we have a wide range of activities on the day like bouncy castles and face painters. The bar will be open and the barbecue will be going so people can have a nice, fun afternoon and hopefully the weather will be nice,” said Jim.
