A LIMERICK man was blessed amongst women when he judged the Philadelphia Rose of Tralee Selection.

David Brennan, formerly of Fr Russell Road in Dooradoyle was one of the three participating judges at the event which was hosted at the Radnor Hotel, located outside Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

David was deemed to be an “ideal choice” due to his Irish background; he was born and raised in Limerick, and moved to the US in 1995.

David graduated from Shannon College of Hotel Management in 1991. He still has strong ties with the college and has provided internships in the Wayne Hotel in Philadelphia - where he is general manager - for students to complete their training.

A total of 10 anxious girls gathered on the Rose selection night in the hope of becoming the 2012 Philadelphia Rose of Tralee. The room was silent with anticipation as master of ceremonies, Jim Donovan of CBS announced that Elizabeth Spellman of Havertown, PA will be going on to represent Philadelphia in the regional rounds at the end of May in Ireland.

The exceptionally high calibre of this year’s participants presented a challenge to David and his fellow judges, but in the end they felt confident in their decision.

“The evening was a magnificent celebration of Philadelphia’s Irish heritage and it was an honour to participate on the judging panel. Selecting the 2012 Philadelphia Rose of Tralee was no easy task, but the judges were unanimous in choosing Elizabeth Spellman. She truly embodies the spirit of this honour and we feel she would be an excellent ambassador for Philadelphia on the international stage in Tralee in August” said David.

Elizabeth Spellman will be heading to Ireland, all expenses paid, from May 30 to June 3 to represent Philadelphia in the Regional Finals of the Rose of Tralee competition. If successful, she will return to Ireland in August to vie for the crown in the final international rounds.

Although David’s immediate family lives in Ireland, the annual trans-Atlantic trips mean that home is never too far away. David became a US citizen in September 2000, in a ceremony attended by family and friends.

After graduating from Shannon College of Hotel Management David worked in the Holiday Inn Garden Court, Warrington; Holiday Inn, London-Heathrow; Crowne Plaza, London-Heathrow and Holiday Inn Garden Court, London-Brent Cross.
