TOP film and television actress Mischa Barton - star of American soap The OC - is coming to Limerick to appear on stage at the new Lime Tree theatre.
Ms Barton, along with Neighbours’ star Anne Charleston - who played Madge Bishop - are to feature in the touring production of Steel Magnolias in the new theatre in Mary Immaculate College in October.
Steel Magnolias is billed as an “enduring tale of love, loss and friendship” and was made famous by Julia Roberts, who appeared in the 1989 film version of the play.
Securing the production, which is currently in rehearsal and opens in the Gaiety next month, represents something of a coup for the 510-seater venue, which will also welcome the Abbey Theatre in October and November to mark the official opening of the brand new theatre.
Gill Fenton, new marketing and box office manager in the Lime Tree said the theatre was “delighted” to be part of the Irish tour which follows a hugely successful UK tour and is Solar Theatre Productions’ first big scale tour to come to Ireland.
“We hope it will be a popular production for Limerick audiences,” explained Ms Fenton.
“The poignant play is packed with 1980s nostalgia and memorable one-liners based on the 1980’s film, it is very funny, but like the film it may make you shed the odd tear so I think it will transfer perfectly within the intimate setting of the Lime Tree,” she added.
Ms Barton - who has featured in dozens of movies over a successful career - hails from London but splits her time between LA and the UK. Speaking recently she said there was “nothing like” appearing on stage.
“I started in theatre, I was theatrically trained and starred in quite complicated productions, and I just always say that doing theatre is as close to being a rock and roll star as an actor because you get that feeling, that kick,” she said.
Steel Magnolias comes to the Lime Tree on October 5 and 6. See www.limetreetheatre.ie for more information and to book tickets.
