FIVE expert Irish Coffee makers will be putting their skills to the test when the vie for the title of Powers Irish Coffee Champion 2014 in Foynes on the June bank holiday weekend.
The competition is one of the highlights of the Foynes Irish Coffee Festival which runs from May 30 to June 1 and will once again feature a spectacular line up of events.
This year’s festival will include live music, a clowns and robots fancy dress, a food and craft fair, busking competition and many more events on the streets of Foynes. The finale will be the dynamic fireworks show over the River Shannon.
The Irish Coffee Championships will take place on the Friday night in the Foynes Flying Boat Museum where the five finalists - including Richard Costello representing the Locke Bar in Limerick - will battle it out for the title and the prize of €500 cash along with two tickets on United Airlines to New York, a Bewleys hamper and a bespoke crystal trophy.
Lorcan Murray of Lyric FM will be the master of ceremonies for the event and tickets are now on sale at €25 each to include an Irish Coffee reception, buffet meal, complimentary wine and music by Ebony.
For those who are still trying to perfect their Irish Coffee making skills, there will be demonstrations of the art in the courtyard of the Flying Boat museum at 2pm and 4pm on the Saturday. Other events taking place during the day include a Sail and Splash at Foynes Yacht Club at 3pm, Feile na Fainge Irish Dancing Feis at Foynes Community Centre at 4.30pm and a Disney disco with Giggles and Disney friends at 7.30pm in the community centre car park.
That night, Christy Moore tribute act Liam Byrne will play a concert in the community centre car park.
On Sunday, June 1, there will be an opportunity to work off some of that Irish coffee with a 5K run and 4K walk in aid of TLC4CF starting from the community centre at 12pm.
Foynes Search and Rescue will host an open day from 1pm to 3pm and there will be a boat race at Foynes Yacht Club at 2pm.
The food and craft fair will run from 12pm to 5pm, while there will also be a birds of prey exhibition.
Later that night, there will be a busking competition on the streets before the fireworks display lights up the night at 10.30pm.
