FORMER Mr World Kamal Ibrahim will be rolling up his sleeves to prove he can handle the heat of the kitchen in a new RTE series to be aired next month.
Kamal, from Thomondgate, who now fronts the National Lottery on Wednesday and Saturday nights, will be joining the debut Irish series of Celebrity Masterchef, which has already proven to be a huge ratings winner in the UK.
Joining him in the kitchen will be racing presenter Tracy Piggott, RTE news presenter Aengus MacGrianna, model Yvonne Keating, consumer affairs journalist Conor Pope, and Apres Match comedian Gary Cooke, amongst others.
The eight contestants will be hoping to wow judges, Michelin-starred chef Dylan McGrath, of the Rustic Stone restaurant in Dublin, and top restaurateur Nick Munier over six weeks.
Kamal told the Limerick Leader that filming is still underway, but he is looking forward to seeing the end result.
“When I was asked to get involved I was a bit naive because it’s much tougher than I imagined. I do cook a lot for myself but not to the level I was expected to in the show. It was quite challenging,” he said.
Grainne McAleer, RTÉ head of lifestyle and formats, said it will be a revealing experience for viewers “to see certain personalities unfold in new circumstances away from the situations that the Irish public are used to thinking of them in.” The series will run for six weeks from July on RTÉ One. Contestants will be eliminated at different stages throughout the series until there is one winner who will be crowned the first Celebrity MasterChef Ireland Champion 2013.
