LIMERICK drummer Ben Wanders has won the prestigious Zildjian Drummer Love Ireland competition.

The 22-year-old drummer with local metal band Shardborne scooped top prize in the competition recently, drumming out competition from around the country in the process.

He now takes home a heap of prizes worth in excess of €14,000, as well as the priceless prestige of being named best drummer in Ireland by one of the world’s top cymbal makers.

“I am delighted to have won it. It is a big deal, it was open to anyone in Ireland to enter it,” said Ben.

Ben was one of seven Irish drummers selected by judges Graham Hopkins of Therapy? fame and Conor Guilfoyle, a renowned jazz drummer.

His final selection as top Irish drummer was made by British drummer Gavan Harrison, currently touring with King Crimson.

“He is one of my favourite drummers so it was brilliant to be picked by him,” said Ben.

The Limerick drummer takes home new Zildjian cymbals among other prizes, as well as a photo shoot with photographer Robert Downs and a spread in a top drumming magazine.
