VOTING is still open in the IMRO Live Music Venue of the Year awards and Limerick’s University Concert Hall is among the nominees.

The thousand seater venue is one of five venues shortlisted for IMRO’s Munster Live Music Venue of the Year - and are the only venue in Limerick nominated in any of the categories.

Hundreds of venues across the country were considered for the awards shortlist by more than 8,000 Irish Music Rights Organisation members.

Venues were judged on their “commitment to providing the core elements that make for a great live music venue - atmosphere, sound and lighting, staging, diversity of programming and most importantly, the staff and management at each venue” and UCH director David Collopy broadly welcomed the nomination.

“The term ‘live music venue’ is usually associated with popular music culture however the IMRO award covers all live music – from opera and classical symphonic to rock, pop and trad and all points in between,” said Mr Collopy.

“Certainly from a global music perspective University Concert Hall offers the best range of live music in Munster,” he continued.

“There is no other venue in the province that regularly offers such a broad range of live musical styles. From that perspective alone UCH is most deserving of this award,” he added.

Live music fans should simply log on to Survey Monkey and choose their favourite from the shortlist provided, by Sunday February 19. One lucky participant will win an iPod Touch.

“We would encourage all the readers to log on and cast a vote in favour of their local venue,” said Mr Collopy.

The awards will take place on February 28 in IMRO’s Dublin offices.
