A LIMERICK artist is showing his support for his local soccer team and their pending match against Premier League champions Manchester City in a unique way.
Freelance artist Ralph McMahon has lovingly drawn a caricature dedicated to the match this Sunday in Thomond Park. The work features Mario Balotelli, Roberto Mancini and David Silva kicking around Limerick FC soccer balls outside the grounds of the hallowed stadium.
Ralph is an animation graduate of Ballyfermot College and is based in Coonagh. The 33-year-old is son of Ralph McMahon senior, stadium announcer in Jackman Park, Limerick FC’s current home.
Ralph Junior explained that “(his) whole family are artists who have been involved with soccer for years, particularly with Limerick FC.”
“We just wanted to get as much publicity for the game as possible. I did a caricature for the Euros as well, just for the fun of it and to get people behind the team,” Ralph said.
T-shirts with the caricature are currently on sale from the Limerick FC shop in Arthur’s Quay Shopping Centre and will be available on the evening of the match outside the grounds of Thomond Park. The t-shirts retail at €15.
Ralph also wants to contribute to charity through his art.
“I am also doing pop-art portraits, one of Mancini and one of Balotelli to be signed by both football celebrities. There will be a raffle for the paintings and the proceeds will go to charity,” he explained.
The raffle is expected to take place one week after the game, with tickets to be made available on the club’s official website.
Ralph’s caricatures and artwork have portrayed celebrities, local people and have also featured on wedding invitations. The impressive work is available to see on his Facebook page at Ralph McMahon Facebook.
