THE WICKED Chicken celebrates a year of being back in business with a monster party this June bank holiday weekend.

The venue, reopened under the management of David O’Donovan and Eightball.ie, threw open its doors at the end of May last year after a period of closure, and has seen a new lease of life under its new bosses, with some of the country’s top DJs and local talent performing over the past 12 months in its comfy surrounds.

This weekend sees big name DJs such as Charles Webster - who played a top set in the Wicked Chicken last August and returns for a spin in the Underground this Sunday - Arveene and Misk (Underground, Friday) and Donal Dineen (pictured - Wicked Chicken, Sunday) joined by some of Limerick’s top local talent, including Leon on Friday night and the WTF crew of Frawl and DID taking control of the intimate bar on Saturday night.

Former Today FM host Dineen, in particular, has become both a huge fan and regular visitor to the Chicken, ringing in the new year in the complex and making a much heralded recent reappearance in the bar. He has had some nice things to say both about the bar and Limerick.

“The opportunities to play tunes out these days are fewer and farther between which makes them all the more enjoyable and worthwhile when they do arise. That’s what this weekend’s gigs are about. It’s a night at the Social away from the Network. Limerick has always been a home away from home for music lovers,” Dineen wrote recently.

“There’s an appetite for things new that makes it a memorable place for the harbingers of fresh sounds to show their wares. The city has been well served by great dj’s since the tables first turned. There’s been a long line of class operators in that neck of the woods for a long time. To a visiting DJ, the knock-on effect of this is always apparent. Long before Wireless there were Hotspots. Certain places benefited from the presence of significant nodes & conductors. Cork, Limerick & Galway are good examples.”

We couldn’t agree more with the infinitely more wise Mr Dineen. Happy Birthday to the Chicken from us!
