PETER Walls’ brand of street opera has won him scores of admirers since he first belted out a song on the corner of Catherine Street and Thomas Street over two years ago.

Now he is taking the busker’s intimate relationship with his stage a step further with a CD of his work and concert in the Pery Hotel - all with the backing of Thomas Street traders.

“In principle, getting the people around you who are benefitting from what you’re doing to support you isn’t a new idea, it’s old wine in new bottles in that sense I suppose,” Peter told the Leader this week.

“I tried Cruises Street initially and it was ok and O’Connell Street and then I found that corner on Thomas Street.

“You know they took a real chance with that street, they invested in it and devleoped it and I came along to a ready made stage.”

His contribution to the life of the place on Saturdays has not gone unnoticed by the street traders either and backing is forthcoming for his CD and concert.

“The traders are on board in the sense they’ve emphatically said yes and Bella Italia is hosting a CD launch on November 8. They’re putting a lot of effort into it

“I’ve also asked people like Padraig Frawley, Gerry O’Connor, Tony Clarke, Niall Bourke and others and they’ve given me a promise that they’d sponsor me financially.”

With up to 40 traders on the street, there is scope for Peter to cover the considerable costs of his recording and the concert which will feature grand piano and string quartet accompaniment.

Peter has recorded one song with his daughter and another by his brother on the new CD and adds, “I don’t want to scare people off with too much new stuff, so I’ll be singing favourites like Nelle Fantazie and That’s Amore and others. There are around 10 or 11 songs, there were seven on my first CD, so I’m making progress and I’m excited by it.

“I’m making my income from the street and what I’m doing now is taking it to the next level with the website, and DVD and then indoor work. I want to get indoors next year, that’s my plan!”

Tickets for ‘Peter Walls in concert’ in the Pery Hotel on November 11 will be available at the CD launch in Bella Italia on November 8 at 8pm. They can also be had from reception at Pery Hotel costing €12
