THE head of the Limerick garda division says the policing operation for the Giant’s Journey will be the biggest ever seen in the city.
Around 150 garda personnel will be on duty across Limerick throughout the Royal De Luxe extravaganza which takes place this weekend following months of planning and preparation.
A number of national support units including the air support unit and the water unit will be deployed to assist local gardai during the flagship event of Limerick 2014.
Chief Superintendent Dave Sheahan says the city centre will effectively be pedestrianised over the three days of the Giant’s Journey and that anybody travelling into the city should plan their journey in advance and allow additional time.
An outer cordon will be established around the city and a rolling road closures will operate from 9am on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Any vehicles parked along the Giant’s route (see royaldeluxelimerick.ie will be removed at 5am on each of three days .
Up to 200,000 people are expected to descend on the city over the weekend.
“This is, without a shadow of a doubt, the biggest event that’s going to be in Ireland for the entire year,” said Chief Superintendent Sheahan.
Supterintendent Dan Keane is advising people to avail of one of several Park and Ride facilities which will operate over the weekend.
“The city, as such, is going to be pedestrianised. It’s going to pedestrianised for the weekend so it’s essential that people are aware that a lot of walking is going to be required around the city for the weekend,” he said.
The Giant will travel around 19km during her time in Limerick and members of the public are being encouraged to following her along the route.
To assist with the policing operation, video feeds from more than 50 cameras as well as the Garda helicopter will be relayed to the communications room at Henry Street garda station where a command centre will be set up.
Senior gardai will be working closely with Limerick City of Culture, Limerick City and County Council and the Health Service Executive throughout the weekend.
