All the indications are that Limerick’s four-day race meeting, starting on St Stephen’s Day, will attract record crowds to the extremely popular event.

Sponsored for the first time by Shannon Airport, a special package to attend the races and follow on to the Munster-Leinster game at Thomond Park, is all but sold out, with well over 10.000 expected on December 26.

As the new manager of the facility at Greenmount Conor O’Neill stresses, it is not all about racing – with a two-hour music session featuring the band Final Touch after each day’s card; a Ladies Day on Saturday and a special Greenmount Grotto on December 29, where children will be kept amused for hours. On the Sunday there will be a special initiative to support local sporting clubs.

And there is a lot more; check out Limerickraces.ie for full details.

For the Ladies Day, Sunway Holidays are putting up a prize of a week in Lanzarote.

Another bonus this year is a free bus service leaving the Augustinian Church, O’Connell Street, at 11.45am each day and returning to the city at 6pm. The races start each day at 12.30pm, or a few minutes later.

“The bookings have been very busy, we are very pleased and all the indications are good,” said Amy O’Regan, sales and marketing executive.

RTE will televise the feature race live on each of the four days.
