NIGHT-TIME visitors to the city centre this Christmas have another attraction to look forward to, as a light show above Penneys went live this week.

A two-minute long, three-dimensional illumination show is being projected onto the facade of the department store between 5pm and midnight from now until Wednesday, December 23.

It will play on a loop as night falls on the city centre.

Mary Hayes, economic development officer with Limerick City and County Council, explained: “The show which is approximately two minutes in length brings one of the most iconic buildings on Limerick’s main thoroughfare to life with festive animations and spectacular seasonal surprises.”

She added that it is hoped the illumination will “add vibrancy and animate the city”.

Mike Fitzpatrick, the director of Limerick’s bid to become European Capital of Culture in 2020, added: “3D projection video mapping and building projection have now become fused into a new art form that allows public spaces to be turned into stunning video canvases. This illumination, which has been designed specifically for this site, will certainly grab the attention of passers-by and will enhance the experience of visitors to the city over the coming weeks.”

The countdown to Christmas is well under way, with the city’s festive lights being turned on last month, and the Milk Market following suit at a ceremony attended by Mayor Liam Galvin.
