LEADER Reporter John Hogan spoke to people on Limerick's streets this morning, following the news that 1,900 jobs are to go at Dell.
Seamus Setright, Adare; I feel very sorry for the workers but I don't think it's much different for a lot of people around Limerick. I only reckon myself that there's only a few weeks work left on the job that I'm doing at the moment and after that I don't know what I'll do. People will just have to leave and that's what they will do, there's no point in sitting around with no money in your pocket, kicking around stones.
Noel Pearse, Rathbane; It was a long time coming in fairness, once people heard that the place in Lodz was opening, it was on the agenda really wasn't it? People must have known. I don't think there's much the Government could've done either, sure there couldn't have given them more reimbursements than what they did. If they've made up their mind to go, there's nothing you can do to stop them.
Una Breen, Ennis Road; I'm not surprised but I feel very sorry for anyone working there. It's horrendous for Limerick and not just for the people working there but all the small businesses that rely on Dell too. There's going to be a huge knock-on effect on so many other shops and businesses. I know people working there and they were trying not to worry but it was impossible, it put a cloud over Christmas.
Mark Fitzgerald, Killalee; It was inevitable. I left Dell myself in September after working there for two years and people knew even then that there were going to be major job losses down the line. They probably couldn't have predicted the scale of the losses though at the same time. There's a lot of foreign workers there at the moment and I think they'll leave because they won't fancy paying the kind of rent that's being charged here.
Kevin Purcell, Ballynanty; It's a real shame for Limerick. I think the Government should have gotten more involved in at least finding out what the story was so they could prepare for it in advance rather than everyone finding out when they went in this morning. I experienced the same thing in Krupp's, I worked there for 31 years and when that closed it was a huge blow to Limerick also. Limerick is going to be like a ghost town after it.
Sheila Begg, Corbally; I think it's dreadful and it will have an effect it so many different areas of industry. I'm not sure if people will be leaving Limerick but I'm certain that some will lose their homes. I know that there are a lot of couples working in there that rely on their wages to make mortgage repayments. The Government could have done more in my opinion, they should have insisted on Dell staying in the country for a certain amount of time before they offered them so many grants.
