EVEN Daniel O'Connell was cheering for Spain's World Cup heroes in Limerick last night, with the statue of The Liberator decked out in the Spanish flag.
Spaniards around the world celebebrated their country's first win in the soccer World Cup last night - and Limerick was no exception, with the famous patriot recruited to the party.

In the city there were plenty of celebrations and a few athletic Spanish fans managed to climb onto the Daniel O'Connell monument on the Crescent and wrap their country's flag around him.

But as the second picture in our gallery shows, staff from City Hall were not long arriving early this morning to take away the flag.

An other Irish opinion,

Ireland 14/07/2010 01:51:12
Spain has a history in common with Ireland. We can not forget this, and we believe that it was a way to celebrate the victory with the Irish citizens, also without damaging the monument and respecting the people of limerick always.

Congratulation Spain!!
