LIMERICK city is to host the breathtaking firework show, Skyfest, on Saturday March 13.
An official announcement regarding what is described as a "exceptional pyro-musical presentation where dazzling colours and explosive effects are choreographed to an amazing soundtrack" will be made this Friday.

Skyfest is sponsored by the National Lottery. This is just the third time that the fireworks and musical spectacular will take place outside Dublin. Last year, it was in Waterford and was also hosted at the Rock of Cashel in Co Tipperary.

"We are delighted that Limerick is the chosen venue for the National Lottery Skyfest. It will be an integral part of our Limerick St Patrick's Festival celebrations," said Laura Ryan of Limerick Co-ordination office.

"We have a fantastic line-up of events this year and we are looking forward to announcing details of our 40th International Band Competition and our St Patrick's Day Parade theme over the coming days.

"Limerick hosts the second largest St Patrick's Day parade in Ireland, so it's only fitting that we will host one of the most spectacular outdoor events to take place in the country this year," she added.

The International Band parade will be held on Sunday, March 14.
A concerted effort is being made to bring as many bands as possible to the city following concerns in recent years over the number of participants in the event.
