THE following is the text of the statement issued to the Limerick Leader, this Thursday by the Mayor of Limerick, Cllr Kevin Kiely.
"I fully accept that comments attributed to me by Limerick Leader reporter David Hurley were accurately recorded and I regret having made them in a way that did not accurately reflect my views.

It was not my intention to cause any offence to EU nationals who are legally entitled to live in Ireland and who have contributed much to this country. I apologise if I have done so and I unreservedly withdraw my initial remarks.

In my comments on foreign nationals receiving social welfare payments, I was specifically referring to those individuals who travel to Ireland with one the aim of taking advantage of our social welfare system.

I am conscious of the thousands of foreign nationals who are living and working in Limerick who have made our city their home.

I wish to acknowledge, as Mayor of Limerick, the huge contribution in an economic cultural and social sense and that these people have made to the city and my comments were in no way attributed to them.

My comments were also not in reference to foreign nationals who have become unemployed and are actively seeking work in Ireland.

I still am of the opinion and, so are others that have approached me in recent days, that there is abuse of the Irish social welfare system. But in seeking to highlight this I inadvertently caused offence to others, which I very much regret.

I hope this clarifies my statement and I will be making no further comment on the matter."

Not good enough by a long shot.

I suggest that Mayor Kiely should consider his position as he has brought the position of Mayor of Limerick into disrepute and tarnished the good name of our city.

I was deeply shocked and angry to hear the comments with which Mayor Kiely requested that EU nationals should be deported if they have been unemployed for over 3 months.

Originally from Scotland, I have been living here for almost the last 10 years, I have worked consistently throughout this time until May of this year when I was made redundant. During the last 10 years, I have more than paid my fair share in taxes in this country.

During this time, I have got married and have one beautiful Irish daughter whom I am very proud and I call this my home.

I take great offence when someone of his position (who should know better) makes comments like this. Who does he think he is? Every EU citizen has a right to work in any EU country irrespective of where they come from.

Like many other people, I feel Mr. Kiely should resign immediately from his position, these kind of comments are disgraceful and will do nothing to serve in the best interest of Limerick city. I'd much rather prefer if he dealt with the more pertinent immediate issues of the city such as serious crime, failing businesses, graffiti, promoting a beleagured city as that is what we have employed him to do.

Despite his apology, I feel that if he is capable of making these remarks, I think he should hang up his gown and cap and either make his way to Britain and join up with Nick Griffin's BNP party or head to Tennessee and hook up with the Ku Klux Klan.

Yours sincerely

Chris Purdie

I'm sure the Mayor's views are shared by lots of locals in Limerick. Contrary to what the MEP says, I am of the opinion that Limerick isn't a welcoming place at all, nor are it's people. Tribalism and rife ignorance towards "foreign" issues are the order of the day in Limerick and to deny the fact is to acknowledge your own ignorance. Just like the Mayor is doing now. The decisive part of the Mayor's statement is perhaps what he didn't say: that he never once implied Irish people are also or perhaps mostly Irish people in particular the 16 to 25 age group, are the ones abusing the welfare system! instead he chooses to lay the blame exclusively on EU residents like they are some kind of black death. It certainly sounds like what Hitler said about the Jews back in those shiny days. Let me just add that EU citizens have as many rights in this country as in any other country in the EU and can not be pushed out like banana-boat migrants. Paradoxically, so do Limerick people have the same rights in other EU countries. Well this little thing called the EU is a reality for Limerick as much as it is for Lisbon, Paris or Barcelona so USA number one, if you aren't happy n Limerick F off to America with your ignorance and see what you get there for your 20 years. This is Europe. The Mayor of Limerick should resign.
