A KILMALLOCK-born Garda based in Galway is recovering after he received more than 100 stitches following a vicious attack by a pitbull terrier during a drugs raid.
Garda John Leahy, who is a former recipient of the Scott medal for bravery, was set upon by the dog as he and other members of the drug unit of Galway City Garda Station were searching a house on Dominic's Road at approximately two o'clock on Friday morning.

There were three dogs in the house at the time, two of which were pitbulls and the attack is said to have lasted several minutes.

According to Garda Leahy's mother, Delia, John was discharged from hospital on Saturday but is still in "a lot of pain".

Garda Leahy, who is in his forties, sustained the injuries to the calf of his left leg and was taken to University College Hospital Galway where his wounds required surgery.

The two dogs have since been put down.

A former hurler with Kilmallock, Garda Leahy is well-known in GAA circles having been a key figure in the Limerick Supporters Club branch in Dublin during the 1990's.
