LIMERICK could get a boost of €10m over next year's May Bank Holiday when up to 7,000 participants descend on the city for a unique sporting event.
On Sunday May 2, 2010, the city will play host to the Great Limerick Run, a unique trio of runs, which will cater for all ages. Supported by Shannon Development, Limerick's city and county councils, the regeneration agencies, Limerick Sports Partnership, and the Limerick Co-Ordination Office, the event will work hand in hand with the city's Riverfest celebrations.
There will be three events - each aimed at people of different running abilities.
A 26-mile marathon, a 13-mile half marathon and a ten kilometre fun run will take place, in a move which represents the first ever time three events like these have been held in the same location on the same day
It is also the first time a marathon returns to the city for more than a quarter of a century - and the organisers hope this reinforces Limerick's position as Ireland's sporting capital.
Speaking at the launch of the event this morning, organiser Martin Tynan said those behind the project have been working to bring this event to fruition for more than 18 months.
"The Great Limerick Run....provides runners of all calibres and experience a means of taking part with a half marathon and 10k option. The job starts here to get the word around to people of all running ability that a world class event will be taking place in Limerick next May, and there is no better place to come and enjoy a weekends sport than Limerick," he said.
Athlete Rosemary Ryan - twice winner of the Limerick Leader Women's Mini-marathon - concluded: "By focusing not just on a marathon, but also a half marathon and 10k, the event really is all inclusive and caters not just for full time athletes, but those looking to get fit, have fun and raise some money for charity."
