Nurses’ strike causes cancellation of operations in city

A strike by 60 theatre nurses at the Mid Western Regional Hospital in Dooradoyle has caused the cancellation of about 30 operations.

All patients affected are believed to have been contacted already. An emergency service will be provided in one theatre during the strike.

This action is due to be repeated on this Friday.

The Mid-Western Health Board said that the strike action by the theatre nurses who are members of the INO and SIPTU will have serious implications for patient care.

“The action will have significant effect on patients some of whom had operations cancelled previously because of the work to rule and pressure on beds,” said a spokesman.

“This stoppage is a national issue which can only be settled at national level between the unions and the Health Services Employers Agency,” he added.

The operations that have been cancelled cover a range of procedures from general surgery, gynaecology, ENT, orthopaedics and ophthalmology. Nurses have been on a work to rule procedure since last October.
