LIT graduates advised of difficult road to success

THOUSANDS of student have graduated from Limerick Institute of Technology across its three campuses in Limerick and Tipperary.
Speaking at the graduation ceremonies, president of LIT, Dr Maria Hinfelaar, said the students were leaving behind a very different institution from the one they joined four years.
Dr Hinfelaar spoke of the numerous success stories in LIT’s recent history, including the honour of being the winner of the institute of technology of the year award for 2012/13 by the Sunday Times University Guide.
This is the second time LIT has been in the leading position in this category, which has not been replicated by any other institution in the country.
She announced that LIT will also soon have one integrated students’ union, as up to this academic year they have had three separate student unions: one on the main campus in Moylish, one in the School of Art and Design in Clare Street, and of one in Tipperary.
In spite of the considerable change in the economic climate, she said two thirds of last year’s graduates had gone directly into employment by November last, which was an improvement on previous records.
“We are almost back to pre-recession figures,” she said, adding that the other third had gone on to further study or internships.
“So let me reassure you that LIT graduates have an excellent reputation and your future as graduates from the IOTI of the year is bright. Our graduates are noted for their pragmatic, solution oriented and entrepreneurial spirit, in some cases their truly creative spirit,” she said.
“All of our graduates here have travelled down a long and sometimes difficult road to academic success, and have also developed as people.
“All of you know that success does not happen easily or overnight; that natural talent must be harnessed to huge dedication and constant hard work if the finishing line is to be successfully reached. And we’ll be doing our best to sustain that legacy here at LIT.”
