Homework club opens in heart of Limerick

New after-school club: Suzanne Roche

A MOTHER-of-three has opened a homework club for children with learning difficulties in the heart of the city.

Suzanne Roche initially set up ‘Less Stress, More Success’ in 72 O’Connell Street with the aim of helping families struggling with back-to-school costs.

While she still offers school essentials including books, uniforms, footwear, jackets and coats, Suzanne has opened up a homework club operating on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings.

The money she makes from the sales is fed back into helping the children.

She has secured the services of two LIT students to help run the club, and offer one-to-one help to the children.

“They were not allowed to go into their homework clubs in schools. We started out with three children, and now we have 11,” she explained, adding that the one-on-one help has made a difference to the children’s grades.

“We have children who have gone up from getting grades of two out of 10, to nine out of 10 through this club. Parents have been called in by teachers who want to know how their children can go from one extreme to another,” she explained.

In the shop, Suzanne has 23 volunteers on hand to help out, selling donated school uniforms at lower prices to those who need them.

Deputy mayor Maria Byrne is one of the people who helps in the shop.

She paid tribute to the businesswoman.

“It makes life easier for those people who cannot afford to buy anything new, in terms of school uniforms,” Cllr Byrne noted.

She also praised the way the children at the homework club learn by doing - citing one visit to the Hunt Museum recently.
