Swearing is caring in County Limerick pub

A PUB in Pallasgreen has brought new meaning to the phrase “put your money where your mouth is”.
For a couple of months Chaser’s bar and restaurant, owned by the Whelans, was the politest pub in Ireland.
Customers had to watch their Ps and Qs as one slip of the tongue would mean a fine of 50 cent each.
Bar supervisor in Chaser’s, John O’Neill, came up with the idea of introducing a swear jar.
“One evening myself and a few of the regulars were at the bar chatting. I suggested a swear jar behind the counter would be a good laugh,” said Mr O’Neill.
The idea took off and soon the money was pouring in.
“We did it for a couple of months and planned to give it to Milford Hospice before Christmas. For every swear word you had to throw in 50 cent.
“It was great craic. We were winding each other up to swear to get the 50 cent off them!” joked Mr O’Neill.
He says there was no one culprit, who donated the most.
“Everybody was generous, there was no one person in particular. Everyone donated equally. Some didn’t swear at all and still gave money,” he added.
They decided to donate all the proceeds to Milford Hospice from day one.
“When we started it there were some people around here going in to Milford. They’ve helped a lot of people locally and it’s a charity close to a lot of people’s hearts,” said Mr O’Neill.
A bit like a piggy bank, they couldn’t open the tin to see how much was in it. Mr O’Neill dropped it in to Milford and the total came to €439 which Chaser’s rounded up to €450.
Pubs in Pallasgreen are known for hosting original ideas to raise money for charity. Last Halloween a guess who will jump out of the coffin event attracted big crowds to the Red Deer.
