Restaurant Review - Synott's Bar and Restaurant

EVERYBODY likes to pore over a menu and digest the culinary choices on offer before ordering in a restaurant, but on Friday night in Synotts Bar and Restaurant, there was only one option for me - the 'Thank God it's Friday Burger'.

I was very grateful it was Friday and I was happy to enjoy a burger in recognition of the day and to celebrate the start of the weekend.

There was no better place to enjoy a relaxing meal than in the bar and restaurant located in Newtown, Castletroy.

We were joined by the fine men of the Munster rugby team - on television screens only - who were taking on the might of the Glasgow Warriors in the Magners League.

The bar was packed with Munster fans vying for an opening night victory and the excitement made for a great atmosphere.

We built up a big appetite watching Peter Stringer and Doug Howlett handling the ball, and we decided we could handle a beef burger.

Munster might have suffered a defeat at the hands of the Scots but we got a great result in Synotts.

Rugby fans enjoyed snack baskets, as they watched the game, complete with sausages, breaded mushrooms and chips.

An 8 oz prime steak sandwich was on the menu but my companion and I decided to choose from the excellent selection of burgers.

The menu boasts "100 per cent Irish beef served here", and we were

happy to keep the Irish farmers happy.

Synnott's Special beef burger, Mexican Salsa beef burger, Mushroom beef burger or Garlic beef burger - what to choose?

I opted for the Thank God it's Friday burger which was char-grilled with sauted onion, a fried egg and baked beans.

And at €10.95, it wasn't going to break the bank. My friend chose the pepper burger - a char-grilled beef burger accompanied by a boat of pepper cream sauce.

The burgers were served with side salad and a very generous portion of

french fries.

But let me get back to the burgers. The beef burger must have measured

three inches and was mouthwatering in a seed coated bap. They were savoured but quickly devoured, and the struggle began to finish the french fries.

We raised a glass of South Australian Chardonnay to Synotts, and

particularly to their staff who were friendly and made us feel very welcome.

The restaurant also serves cajun chicken caesar salad; half roast chicken served with herb stuffing and roast gravy, potatoes and vegetables; toasted panninis; traditional fish and chips; and if you don't feel like meat, broccoli and Stilton quiche and tortelloni of spinach and ricotta cheese are also on the menu.

I have a very sweet tooth and I often check the dessert menu before starters and main course, and at Synotts I was not disappointed.

Death by chocolate, Baileys cheesecake, lemon cheesecake, sherry trifle, mint eclairs and Black Forest gateaux, all graced the menu and even though we really did not have room for dessert we still had

tiramisu, which we shared.

Our waitress, Olivia Griffin, spoiled us with a scoop of cream each, and we happily finished a lovely meal with a cup of coffee.

I left Synotts on Friday night feeling envious of the local residents in

Castletroy and Annacotty who have such a friendly eaterie on their

doorstep.

Food is served until 9pm every day at Synotts.
