IF YOU like to capture the wonderful landscape or wildlife all around us then why not enter MulkearLIFE’s Amateur Photo Competition.

The prize fund is €1,000 and the winning photos will be published in the Limerick Leader - media partner.

The competition is being run to mark the 20th anniversary in May of the EU LIFE Programme. Ruairí Ó Conchúir, project manager of MulkearLIFE, says the events are designed to raise awareness of the LIFE programme and the work being undertaken.

“In Ireland, MulkearLIFE has been working to implement its plans to restore the Lower Shannon Special Area of Conservation for sea lamprey, Atlantic salmon and otter. MulkearLIFE has made very considerable progress over the past two years,” said Mr Ó Conchúir, of the €1.75 million European Commission funded LIFE nature project.

He says there are some fantastic prizes on offer for children and adults in the competition. The theme of the photo competition is exploring the biodiversity of the Lower Shannon.

“But what is biodiversity? In simply terms, it means the variety of life on earth. Thus in terms of images that capture the theme of exploring biodiversity there is no limit to the type of photos entered.

“It could be an image of water, trees, plants, fish, invertebrates, fungi, mammals, birds, lichen, domestic animals, basically any living organism. They may cover any aspect of biodiversity including people enjoying biodiversity,” said Mr Ó Conchúir.

The images can be macro or landscape, black and white or colour. While is it not essential, images which portray biodiversity in and along rivers, streams and watercourses throughout the Lower Shannon region would be preferred, says the project manager.

The competition opened on January 16 and closes on May 1. It is open to amateur photographers only. Entry is free and you can submit up to three images related to the theme.

The prize fund is €1,000, offered in two categories of prizes, children/young adults (under 18 as of May 1 2012) and adults. The overall winner will receive a day’s training in wildlife and landscape photography from a wildlife photographer.

Entering the competition is easy. Simply take or submit a photo you have recently taken, within the period January 1 2009 and May 1 2012. Email your image in digital format (1mb - 5mb) to photos@mulkearlife.com with photo competition in the subject line. You must also send your photo in print format (A4) to MulkearLIFE Amateur Photo Competition, Inland Fisheries Ireland, Ashbourne Business Park, Limerick. All entries must be accompanied by a description, name, address and daytime telephone number. Please state your age if you are taking part in the children/young adults category.
