Great Limerick Run aims to have 10,000 participants by 2014
Almost 2,500 people have already registered to take part in this year's Great Limerick Run
THE organisers of the Great Limerick Run have set a cap of 8,000 entrants on this year’s event, members of the sports and cultural committee at Limerick City Council have been told.
John Cleary, pictured, said that 2250 people have already registered to take part on May 8 and he was confident the numbers who would eventually do so would top last year’s 6,700.
“We have actually set a cap of 8,000 for 2012 because of the logistics of involved in ordering medals and tee-shirts. We are heading for that number and it will be a good problem to have,” said Mr Cleary.
The Great Limerick Run was already the biggest mass participation sporting event outside of Dublin and Mr Cleary said the ambition was to grow the number of entrants to 10,000 by 2014.
This was getting into the territory of the Dublin City Marathon - which has 13,000 entrants.
Mr Cleary hoped that the addition of a walking marathon this year - to go with full-marathon, half-marathon and 10k runs - would increase the event’s appeal.
