Big makes its Irish debut at UL for local musical society

At the launch of the Limerick Musical Society forthcoming production of "BIG" The Musical,Michelle Crowley, Paul Noonan and Hilary Burke.

BIG, the musical based on the blockbuster film starring Tom Hanks is being brought to the University Concert Hall, Limerick by the Limerick Musical Society on Thursday, March 8, 9 and 10 for a three night run.

Big began as a hit film before being adapted for the stage in 1996. This production will be its first performance in Ireland and bursts onstage in this ‘vibrant, funny and touching musical’.

Hailed as “the ideal family musical” Big involves a 12-year-old boy, Josh Baskin, who grows up overnight after being granted a wish by a magical arcade machine at a carnival.

With the aid of his best friend, Josh must cope with his new adulthood while finding another arcade machine so that he can wish himself a kid again.

Richie Ryan directs the talented 40-strong cast, which includes veteran Limerick actors as well as theatre-newcomers, under the careful supervision of vocal director, Máire Keary-Scanlon. A full set and accomplished house band help to bring the music of David Shire to life, with lyrics by Richard Maltby Jr.

Limerick Musical Society was founded in 2000 to bring the best of musical theatre to local audiences. They have staged many productions including ‘The King and I’, ‘West Side Story’, ‘Fiddler on the Roof’, ‘The Hot Mikado’ and their recent sell-out production last year of ‘The Pirates of Penzance’ in the University Concert Hall to enthusiastic audiences.

Big stars Stephen O’Riain as John Baskin; he trained at Centrestage Theatre School and Spotlight Stage School in Limerick and has now graduated from Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London.

Hilary Burke also stars as Sarah Lawrence, Shane Barriscale as Paul Seymour, Richie Ryan is George MacMillan in the production as well as the director and Jared Nadin plays Billy Kopecki in the show.

‘Big’ is directed by well known local director, Richie Ryan; choreographed by Niamh Twoomey and musical direction will be led by award-winning choral director, Maire Keary-Scanlon. Since this production is an Irish premiere of this fun-filled family production.
