Treasured look back at Limerick’s photographic history

A TREASURE trove of memories, nostalgia and near forgotten photographs are once again captured in Sean Curtin’s latest edition of Limerick - a Stroll Down Memory Lane.

Volume 12 of the ever-popular series of photographs of Limerick from years gone by was launched in the Limerick Leader offices, where Sean worked for 43 years.

A regular columnist with the Limerick Leader, his work has once again received plaudits from the public, with more than 50 friends and former colleagues attending the launch in the newspaper’s boardroom.

Over the past 12 years of producing the collection, Rathbane man Sean has captured more than 1,500 photographs which otherwise may not have seen the light of day again.

He has been collecting the photographs for 30 years.

Among this year’s collection are photographs of an address by John B Keane outside the old Theatre Royal, and scenes from the Limerick hurler’s All-Ireland victory in 1973.

The collection was launched by Mayor Gerry McLoughlin - something which prompted Limerick Leader editor Alan English to joke that “it must be the first time in history a Young Munster man has asked a Shannon man to launch his book!”. Mayor McLoughlin added: “It is nice to go back to the associations we have had from the 50s and 60s. We all have wonderful memories of growing up in Limerick. It is nice to see photographs of people who have since passed away. I saw a picture there of Henry Cooney, a big supporter of the GAA. It brings back lovely memories, and in the current climate, it is nice to have these.”

Meanwhile, Sean revealed that from next year, his son, professional photographer Sean junior, will take over the publication of the collection - but he insisted he will keep a close eye on things!

The book can be bought in the Leader’s front office, 54 O’Connell Street, priced at €15.
