A TEAM of students from CBS Sexton Street have flown the flag for Limerick city in a unique assault on the marathon world record.

World Marathon Day, a challenge co-ordinated locally by Limerick City Sports Partnership at the UL Arena, saw teams from across the globe complete the 42km course in relay format, with teams of between 26 and 36 runners.

Sexton Street clocked two hours, 22 minutes and 20 seconds, putting them a full three seconds faster than Caitriona McKiernan’s Irish record but some minutes shy of John Treacy’s Irish male record.

Liam Cantwell, youth sports development officer with Limerick City Sports Partnership, said a special mention must go to the lads at Sexton Street and their principal Tom Prendergast in being the only city centre school to attempt the challenge this year.

“They were the only all-boys team from Ireland and one of only five all boys teams from across the world, with three from the UK and one from Afghanistan. The students from CBS did their school and their country proud and finished with a very respectable time of 2 hours 22 minutes and 20 seconds to complete the 26.2 mile run,” said Liam.

The starting gun was fired at the Arena last week by Mayor Gerry McLoughlin and Cllr Jerome Scanlon, cathaoirleach, Limerick County Council. Limerick was also represented by teams from Castletroy College, Colaiste Chiarain in Croom and Salesians College, Pallaskenry.

It is hoped that more city schools will now take the baton and follow the trailblazing example set down by CBS Sexton Street by taking part in next year’s challenge. Schools interested in taking part can contact Liam Cantwell on 087 2562580.
