‘New vision’ and director for Daghdha in Limerick
A NEW director of the previously defunct Daghdha Dance Company is being sought for Limerick.
The position is part of the Arts Council of Ireland’s commitment to the future provision of dance in Limerick and comes as a welcome boost to the cultural life of the city.
Daghdha have been closed since March of last year when the Arts Council removed their funding, but the organisation is now to be resurrected, a new director and “augmented board” appointed, similar to the process that eva International has undertaken, returning this year as a more professional organisation.
The Arts Council have committed in the region of €90,000 to the provision of dance in Limerick - €47,000 of which will be a salary for the new director, who it is hoped will be installed by August or September.
“In discussions with the Arts Council, they have agreed to fund dance in Limerick,” explained city arts officer Sheila Deegan. Limerick City Council are “facilitating the process of reactivating dance in Limerick and helping Daghdha move into the next phase of development”, she explained.
“It would be under a different remit to which Daghdha had in the last number of years. It will be more programming dance rather than devising. It will have a wider remit. We have been looking for possible partners in providing dance in Limerick rather than having just one dance company,” she added.
The company will return to St John’s Church. The commitment amounts to a year of funding and any new director would have to apply for further funding next year for programming.
“The future vision for Daghdha, with an augmented board, would have to be developed and applied to the Arts Council for further funding,” explained Ms Deegan.
Minister of State Jan O’Sullivan and Gordon Milne are the only remaining board members at present. Ms Deegan said she expects “significant interest” in the position.
