Lydia swaps catwalk for kitchen for Mother’s Day treat

A special bond: Model Lydia Turley with her mum Maria at Brown Thomas this week for the Mother's Day shoot

SHE is well-known for gracing the catwalks of Limerick but this Sunday, Lydia Turley, will be found over a hot stove - the ‘model’ daughter is looking forward to rustling up something special for her mum to mark Mother’s Day.

Maria O’Donnell who spends her days teaching teenagers in Castletroy College will be “treated like a queen” on Sunday when she gets to put her feet up and let Lydia do the cooking.

“Mum is a big animal lover and has recently gone vegetarian so I will have to come up with something innovative,” smiled Lydia, the current Miss Spin South West and former Miss Limerick. “I will cook a nice meal for mum and then we will probably take our dogs, Minnie and Elmo, for a walk and just spend the day together – have a nice relaxing day where mum can put her feet up and do nothing.”

Both Lydia and Maria took a trip to Brown Thomas in the city this week where they were pampered and styled for a special Mother’s Day shoot.

The visit to the store re-awakened memories for Maria of Mother’s Days from her past spent with her own mother, also Maria.

“I remember that the three generations of us – my mother, my grandmother and myself would head off to Todds (now Brown Thomas) in Limerick for a shopping spree when I was young. We used to go in and spray ourselves at the perfume counter before we left to head down town,” smiled Maria, a native of Galway. “My brother Mark used to steal daffodils on the way home from the lovely gardens in UCG in Galway and he would bring them to her,” she recalled fondly of her late mother.

While many have criticised the commercial aspect of Mother’s Day, according to Lydia, it is only as commercial as the individual themselves allows it to be. “I think it is a great day because often times we take our mothers for granted and everything they do for us, so it is nice for them to be able to sit back and relax while you give your mum a little treat and let her relax for the day. The children should do the things in the house and all the bits and pieces that the mums are always stuck doing,” said Lydia who lives with her mum in Monaleen.

For Maria, a big high point of the day will be breaking her Lenten fast.

“I break all my promises for that particular day. I went off my Macaroon bars for Lent and I love my Macaroon bars! I’m going to have at least three of them on Sunday and I’m back then, cold turkey, off sweets, after that,” smiled the science and English teacher.

Lydia, who is an only daughter, describes her relationship with her mum as a special bond. So does she share her inner most secrets with her?

“Well, there are a few I leave out,” she laughed. “She is fantastic. She is very easy to talk to and understanding and so supportive of everything I do as well,” said Lydia who is a final year student in UL studying Irish and English. Lydia also models part-time. “She is following in my mother’s footsteps because my mother modelled a bit,” Maria commented.

“She actually looks the image of my mother – it’s like looking into a mirror sometimes. She is the best daughter I could have.”
