Limerick photographer wins award for iconic images

THE story began as a feature in this newspaper, but now Gerry Andrews’ images of Limerick from a forgotten era have taken on a life of their own.

The man who previously worked with the Leader as works manager, has received an Irish Print Award for the quality of work on his publication, Shaped by History: Photographs of Limerick in the 70s. The book was printed by Hudson Killeen, which was nominated for awards across numerous categories this year in an awards ceremony in the Berkeley Court in Dublin last weekend.

“I am absolutely thrilled. It has been a great end to the project. What started out as a feature in the Limerick Leader, has resulted in an exhibition, book, an award and a Fellowship in photography, so I am just chuffed. It has been totally unexpected,” he said. Mr Andrews is currently in Burma, where he is photographing native tribes in remote locations for a number of weeks. His exhibition in the Hunt Museum, which displayed photographs from the book, was regarded as one of the most successful in recent years, and drew a record number of visitors.

He said the images taken in and around the Milk Market some 40 years ago, which previously just had an audience of one, were intended to be “a photographic record of this community before it was lost forever”.

Signed copies of the book are currently available to buy at the Limerick Leader offices at 54 O’Connell Street. It is priced at €25 and those who purchase the book will be entered in a draw to win a superb framed and signed photograph of one the images in Gerry’s book.
