Large number of applications for City of Culture role
INTERVIEWS are set to begin next week to fill the role of artistic director for Limerick City of Culture 2014.
Kieran Lehane, director of service at Limerick City Council, has confirmed that a total of 26 applications were received for the position, which was advertised early last month.
Mr Lehane told members of the Cultural and Sporting Policy Committee this Monday that the appointment of an artistic director would be a “major milestone” ahead of the year-long City of Culture festivities.
The artistic director, who will be paid a salary of €65,000 and hired on a two year basis, will be responsible for drawing up the programme of events for the year.
It is hoped the City of Culture festivities will also provide a platform for Limerick in its bid to be European Capital of Culture in 2020. Former European Parliament president and Freeman of Limerick Pat Cox is to chair the governing group set up to run the initiative, joined on the body by fellow Freemen of the city Paul O’Connell and Riverdance composer Bill Whelan.
The latter has indicated the strong possibility that Riverdance will be performed in Limerick as part of one of the major events for the year, the draft programme for which is expected to be unveiled in June.
