International award for film about Limerick mountaineer

THE feature-length documentary, The Summit, which tells the story of intrepid mountaineer Ger McDonnell’s triumph and tragedy on K2 has won a prize at the Sundance International Film Festival, one of the world’s best-known and most highly-regarded independent film festivals.
The Summit won the Editing Award: World Cinema Documentary and was announced at a ceremony in Park City, Utah.
The Summit, an Image Now Films and Pat Falvey Productions film and with funding from RTÉ among others, was edited by Ben Stark and directed by Nick Ryan.
“This is a great honour for Ben and I would like to thank the jury and the organisers of the Sundance Film Festival for this accolade,” Nick Ryan of Image Now Films, said, following the presentation.
The Summit missed out on main award, the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize for Documentary, to A River Changes Course by director Kalyanee Mam.
The award comes just a week or so after Mr Ryan announced that the film had been picked up by Sundance Selects, a new theatrical and video-on-demand film label that provides a national platform in the US for independent films and documentaries.Meanwhile, distribution rights in Europe and Australia are still being negotiated but The Summit will screen at the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival on February 24.
No date for a screening in Limerick has yet been agreed.
“I would like to thank everyone who helped bring this truly amazing story to the screen,” said executive producer Darrell Kavanagh of Image Now Films.
“At the heart of this film is a human tragedy and I would particularly like to pay tribute to Ger McDonnell and the other climbers who lost their lives on K2.”
he Summit is the story of the world’s worst mountaineering disaster on K2, the world’s second highest mountain, when Ger McDonnell and ten other climbers died in August 2008.
