A new and exciting children’s book is to be launched in the Granary Library on Thursday December 6 at 6.30pm.

James Clyde and the Diamonds of Orchestra is written by Monaghan-born Colm McElwain.

The author of this children’s fantasy book has been touring primary schools in both the city and county to promote the fairytale and read excerpts of the book to schoolchildren.

“I was in lots of schools recently, Monaleen and JFK to name but a few. I really enjoyed it and I hope the children did too,” said Colm.

The story follows the quest of orphan James Clyde after his grandfather gives him a rare and powerful ‘diamond of orchestra’. Powerful and malevolent forces covet the diamond so it is up to James and his friends Ben and Mary Forester, to use the powers of the diamond to defeat the evil forces who want it.

Colm has a Bachelor of Arts Honours degree in PE from UL and is currently studying for a Higher Diploma in PE.

He said: “The main aim of the book was to encourage reading in children. It is mainly aimed at 12 - 15 year olds.”

Colm has always enjoyed reading and explained how his influences, including JK Rowling, CS Lewis, Brian Keaney and Charles Dickens are evident in his writing. “Many children who like the Harry Potter and Narnia series of books should enjoy this tale as it also borrows from the fantasy genre,” he said.

Parents are encouraged to bring children along for “a night the whole family can enjoy” said Colm.

“Everyone is welcome on the night on what will hopefully be a big success,” he enthused.

The book is currently available on Amazon.
