PRAYER FOR GOOD WEATHER: All – powerful and ever-living God, we find security in your care and love for us. Give us the fine weather we pray for and need. May the harvest be secured and the hard work and efforts of so many of our people come to fruition. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

PROLOGUE: “Look at a day when you are supremely satisfied at the end. It’s not a day when you lounge around doing nothing, it’s when you’ve had everything to do and you’ve done it.”

Bereavement: The death has taken place of Sarah Greaney (nee Farley) wife of the late Thomas, Balliston, Shanagolden, at Saint Catherine’s Nursing Home Newcastle West. She was affectionately known as Sal or Sally and she was in her late eighties and the last surviving member of her family. She was a very hard worker well into her retirement years, but in failing health since 2001 and confined to Saint Catherine’s for the past five years. She was a native of County Tyrone and very proud of her county especially when they won their two All Ireland titles in 2003 and 2005. She met her husband Thomas in England and they returned to live and raise their family in the peaceful setting of Balliston. Sally was a hard worker inside and outside the home, and was no stranger to the garden meadow or bog. She enjoyed the game of cards, and the bingo sessions, and also supporting Saint Kieran’s G.A.A. Club, and Kilcolman Rovers Soccer Club. Her late husband Thomas was a founding member of Kilcolman Rovers at their house in 1968. Sally was involved in looking after the club kit and serving tea and refreshments following numerous meetings at her house during the early years of the club. She followed her son’s careers in sports with interest and was proud of her grandchildren’s achievements in later years. She had a warm welcome for all who called to her house and a cup of tea and a slice of brown bread and apple tart was served up.

Bereavement: The death has taken place of Dan Mc Mahon Knockbowheen, Ardagh, and the former owner of Mc Mahon’s Concrete Products, located off the Ardagh to Foynes road. His remains arrived at Saint Molua’s Church Ardagh, for 11.30am Mass on Saturday 20th April. His Requiem Mass was celebrated by Fr Larry Madden, with family involvement in the readings, prayers of the faithful and offertory gifts. A native of Ardagh, he was in his early eighties, and the last surviving member of the family. He was the youngest member of four, brothers Seán, and Jerry and sister Mary. In his young days he immigrated to Australia, and New Zealand where he worked in construction and the pre cast products. He returned to Ireland and married Mary in 1969 and they were blessed with two daughters Bernie, and Trish. Dan set up Mc Mahon Concrete Products beside the family home in Knockbowheen, and it operated very successfully during the seventies, and eighties. It was one of the first in the locality and it is true to say that the majority of homes build at the time contained concrete products made by Dan and staff in scenic and windswept Knockbowheen. He was a very hard worker, and very strong despite being small in stature. He possessed a very sharp and innovative mind and could solve the most difficult of problems in the precast business. He was forced to retire from the business due to ill health around 1987 and the pre cast concrete business was rented out, and it is still in production at present.

CRISIS CONTINUES: The serious crisis in farming due to animal fodder shortages and lack of growth is casting a gloom over the locality as it is in farming circles throughout the country. The older people are comparing it in severity to the 1946-47 period. Not in living memory have cattle been housed for such a prolonged indoor season. The very large bales of hay imported from England have made their appearance in the locality over the past week. All are hoping and praying that a change in the weather will come shortly so as to avoid a major disaster in farming.
