UL student initiative to help give a little back
AN initiative that aims to get students more involved and engaged in fundraising, volunteering and social projects has just been launched by University of Limerick students.
A new Raising & Giving society has been established in the University of Limerick. It aims to usher in a new era of student involvement and engagement in Limerick.
The event, which will see a sky lantern launch for the Sean Lyne Cancer Treatment Fund, is on track to raise in excess of €1,000.
Also planned are a variety of other student-led events. So far the society has gained great support from everybody at the university.
Chairperson Kevin Bolger said: “We want community-based projects in the Limerick area to get involved with us. To ask for our help and collaboration and we can run fundraising events, run awareness campaigns/ videos, and get involved in social projects that would hopefully lead to more student involvement in volunteering.”
He added: “We are an expansion of the RAG Soc model that was launched in DCU last September. They have gone on to raise in excess of €10,000, and have facilitated over 50 monthly volunteers.
“Some of the social projects they have run include a mural in the Aishling centre in Ballymun and running a scheme helping recovering heroin addicts recycle old mattresses and use the money to fund their rehabilitation.
“Through that initiative alone they found a number of students who were affected by the cause and have continued on volunteering for the cause. At UL RAG we hope to surpass their success with the help of the community in Limerick,” he added.
With neighbourhood talks they are hoping to paint a mural on a graffiti-ridden wall in Elm Park, Castletroy - and would hope then that through involvement in the project and from working amongst the residents that some students would maybe take a more personal and developed interest in the Neighbourhood talks project which essentially aims to improve community relations with residents and students in the estate.
There have been complaints over the years by some residents, especially at events during RAG week.
Although they only set up a Facebook page over a week ago they have already got 1,400 people who have been on and liked their initiative.
