Rathbane to get junior golf facility as part of €50k makeover
Rathbane Golf Club
WORK will begin later this year on developing a junior golf facility and on upgrading the sewerage system at the municipal golf course in Rathbane, director of service Pat Dowling has told members of the sports and cultural committee.
It follows confirmation of a grant of €50,000 from the Government last year.
Mr Dowling also informed councillors this Monday that the contract to manage the course - currently held by Mack Trading Ltd - expires in 2012 and the City Council will have to put the job out to tender in the coming months.
As well as looking to improve the drainage and sewerage system on the course, the Council had applied for funding for junior golf facility, which Mr Dowling explained would comprise “ a limited number of greens and pitching areas to teach young people the game”.
Committee chairman Cllr Michael Hourigan said that Rathbane was now “an excellent golf course” and congratulated the private operators for their part in that success.
“No matter who gets the contract to run it in 2013, let’s hope they can do as good a job as what we have had in recent years,” said Cllr Hourigan.
Limerick City Council has invested in the order of €1 million at Rathbane since the course was opened in 1999.
