A NORTHSIDE school is celebrating a unique achievement, after becoming the first in Ireland to get a road sign proclaiming its achievements.

Two years ago, Salesians Infant School on the Lower Shelbourne Road, secured a green flag.

Now, road transport chiefs have agreed to mark this achievement with a ‘Green School Ahead’ sign.

It came to pass through active participation of the parents association in the Green Schools committee and subsequent liaison with Limerick City Council.

In order to get this, the parents association compiled a safety proposal for submission to Limerick City Council.

As part of this, parents counted traffic, detailed the student population of the surrounding area and outlined all of the safety concerns.

Following this, senior engineer at City Hall Rory McDermott visited the school to consult with the parents.

The outcome of this meeting was hugely positive where railings were extended, new road markings and speed ramps were put in place. Throughout the course of this meeting, the roads engineer himself suggested the idea of a road sign to indicate to motorists that children walk to school in this area.

A spokesperson for the Green Schools initiative described the erection of this sign as a “truly tremendous development” for schools in an area which serves Salesians and four other schools. It is hoped this sign and the newly installed ramps will impact positively on traffic.
