Mayor praises dedication of Limerick care workers

Mayor Jim Long was full of praise last Thursday in the South Court Hotel for a group of family carers and care workers to whom he presented certificates after they obtained their FETAC Level 5 qualification in Practical Care Skills.
Many of the recipients had also obtained the FETAC Level 5 in Occupational First Aid.
Steffani-Jade McDonagh, area manager for the Carers Association, remarked on how well everyone had done with a very high number of “distinctions”.
The family carers were praised for taking the time out of their busy caring schedule to train and improve their skills and the care assistants, employed by the Carers Association were also praised for beginning the first of many modules towards earning their FETAC Level 5 major award.
All recipients were delighted with the awards and the mayor praised each individual for their efforts.
Family carers are some of the most devoted and considerate people around and still have very little rights or entitlements under Irish law.
The work provided by them has been saving the state millions of euros every year. Many carers work 24 hours a day, seven days a week yet are not entitled to the same benefits enjoyed by other workers in our society.
Ireland’s laws and regulations on equality, health and safety, working time, and many others do not apply to family carers.
