Limerick schools take part in Eason Spelling Bee competition

ELEVEN year old St Paul’s National School pupil Fiona Gleeson will represent Limerick at the provincial finals of the 2012 Eason Spelling Bee in June.
Fifth class pupil Fiona, from Dooradoyle, won the Limerick heat which was held in her own school of St Paul’s last week and will now go forward to the provincial Spelling Bee competition and possibly the overall final in June, where the four provincial winners will battle it out to be crowned the Eason Spelling Bee 2012 champion.
Fiona’s teacher, Aisling Geary, said she was a “fantastic” student and that Fiona “was over the moon” with the win.
“It was great fun. It is our first year taking part but only the second year of the competition,” explained Ms Geary.
“Fiona will be spelling galore now until June,” laughed the St Paul’s teacher.
Students from schools around the city and county took part, including Martinstown National School, Scoil Chaitríona Cappamore and Gaelscoil an Ráithín. Eason have teamed up with RTÉ 2FM’s Ryan Tubridy Show to deliver Ireland’s ‘ultimate spelling contest’.
Ms Geary said there was great excitement in the school on the day of the final and leading up to it.
“All of the kids root for each other and I suppose what it does is bring out their competitive side and they enjoy supporting their own school representative,” said Ms Geary.
It is a great assignment and we had our own heats in the school beforehand so it had created a stir in the school and even kids that weren’t taking part knew about it and were excited,” she added.
The last two contestants in the Limerick heat went head to head on the word ‘ambiguous’, but Fiona seized the prize with her cool and collected spelling of ‘authorship’, Ms Geary explained.
Ryan Tubridy said that his show was “delighted” to be involved again with the Spelling Bee and wished good luck to everyone taking part.
