Limerick’s Milk Market scoops top national award
Limerick's Milk Market
LIMERICK’s Milk Market has received a top national award at an awards ceremony in Dublin.
The 200 year old market, redeveloped to the tune of €2 million and reopened in June 2010, took best heritage project and was a finalist in the best community based initiative category at the Local Authority Members Association awards in Dublin.
The nationwide awards focus on promoting local business and produce and were hosted in Dublin by RTE’s Miriam O’Callaghan.
In accepting the award, chairman of the Market Trustees, Cllr Michael Sheahan, thanked the organising committee and judging panel and reserved a special word of thanks for the people of Limerick.
“The Market Trustees vision was to enhance this historic market, weather-proofing it so that it would work better as a markets and event venue, all year-round,” he said in his speech.
“The venue has been attracting increasing numbers of visitors to a wider range of markets and events. The venue has successfully staged concerts, recitals, craft fairs, fashion shows, family-fun events, product launches, charity events and more, all adding to the vibrancy of the city and supporting a broad base of business.
“None of this would have been possible without the hard work and dedication of all involved in the project committee, the continuing support of all the stakeholders in the Milk Market but especially the people of Limerick who continue to support the market every week,” he added.
The market was redeveloped as a modern, all-weather facility under a 1.8 tonne, half acre canopy, or “Ireland’s largest tent” as architect Michael Healy has described it.
It has won a number of national awards since it was redeveloped.
Limerick’s Tunnel project, one of the biggest engineering projects ever undertaken in Ireland, was also nominated at the awards, in the best civil engineering project and national impact award categories.
