LIMERICK women are being urged to be more hands on in the fight against breast cancer as a free iPhone app to self-examine for the warning signs is launched.

Be Breast Aware: Have a Feel Day is an initiative of Breast Cancer Ireland and insurers Aviva and comes on foot of research findings that more than two in five of young women forget to check themselves regularly and one in six don’t know how.

The app - a free download on iTunes - provides women with a step-by-step guide on how to perform a self-examination as well as a useful and discreet monthly reminder.

Backing the campaign is Limerick breast cancer research nurse Alva Barry, who is involved in the first national research programme for personalised patient care and has to date seen 107 women enrolled at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital.

“The more women participating in the study will help our researchers further our understanding of breast cancer in Ireland, potentially enabling us to provide the best targeted treatments and continuous improvement in the service provided,” said Alva.

“Earlier detection is also vital in our race against this disease and our hope is that by encouraging women to become breast aware from an early age, they will be more familiar with the natural changes in their breasts throughout their monthly cycle, and will in turn recognise any abnormalities should they arise.”
