UL students launch newspapers for Limerick city

JOURNALISM students at the University of Limerick have launched two local newspapers aimed at Limerick city and the regeneration  areas.

Among the ‘scoops’ in the Regeneration Voice newspaper is their exclusive that €27 million has been allocated in the Budget to disadvantaged areas in the city designated for regeneration in 2013.

The newspaper aimed at the city, the Limerick Voice, reveals that the city and county councils are facing a €20 million deficit because of a drop in commercial rates, with one-in-three homeowners yet to pay the controversial household charge.

Both newspapers were distributed in last weekend’s editions of the Limerick Leader, and are still available at our offices at 54 O’Connell Street.

The Regeneration Voice will also be distributed free by Limerick City Council to the 2,000 residents living in the Regeneration areas.

Vice president academic and registrar, Professor Paul McCutcheon, said this project is one of many the university is undertaking in its efforts to reach out to disadvantaged communities in Limerick.

“The university is deeply committed to the Regeneration initiatives in Limerick and we hope the Limerick Voice and the Regeneration Voice newspapers and other on-going projects will yield significant benefits for the communities involved,” said Prof McCutcheon.

The Regeneration Voice was produced by the graduate diploma and MA journalism students, under the guidance of their course director Mary Dundon.

The second and fourth year students in the BA in Journalism and New Media course produced the Limerick Voice newspaper.
