Students from a prominent city third level institute have been welcomed to join an international university-based partnership between business and higher education for social change by Leo Cullen, Leinster Rugby Captain.

Cullen and Enactus Ireland, formerly known as Students In Free Enterprise, announced on Monday that UL is one of three more Irish universities joining the Irish programme in the coming year.

UL is among two other new entrants, NUI Maynooth and UCC to join the international higher education and business partnership.

Founded in the US in 1975, Enactus is an international, not-for-profit organisation which “encourages university students to make a positive difference to their communities, while developing the skills to become socially responsible business leaders of the future” according to the organisation.

Mr Cullen, Leinster Rugby and Enactus Ireland Director, said: “From being involved in judging the competition last May I saw at first hand not only the fantastic projects that the students developed, but also the great personal skills they acquired in the process. Because of that I’m delighted that UL ... has come on board for this year’s programme.”

The seven teams will work on their chosen initiatives during the academic year which will then be presented to a judging panel of senior Irish business leaders at a national competition which will be held in Dublin in May of next year.

The winning team will then progress to represent Ireland at the Enactus 2013 World Cup, which takes place in Cancun, Mexico from the September 29 to October 1 2013.
